Philippines Contemporary Jazz- Bob Aves
Caught this recital at National Museum yesterday at 3pm. Partly for my music report, haha, but also because i love saturday matinee concerts. It was in conjunction with the Mabuhay! festival, that a few Philippines performing groups came over.
There's even a outdoor one tonight! argh!
Anyway, the response for the recital was really bad, 30 odd people came? Bob Aves was very passionate in advocating the need to preserve traditional music. I totally enjoyed the recital, Bob Aves says it's supposed to be a lecture concert, which he did explain in great details the pieces they performed.
Weird enough, I liked the sound of the kulintang together with his style of jazz. I always thought i would be quite unable to accept this sort of fusion, especially, back then i find pentatonic scales very weird.
Then there was this vocal part, which he he invited Grace Nono to sing. oh man, the first word that came to my mind was 天籁。
She sang this song, hmmm more like a chant, translating to, if i am a bird with wings, i'll fly up high and abandon all the sorrows.
Aw. such sweet sorrows.
